Who are you Grannyg?

Hello!!

Well, yes, I’m Grannyg. I know, I know, how is it possible for someone who looks to be a cherubic 42yo called Grannyg?

Well one day the birds and the bees did their magic on a dear friend of mine, this friend and her partner both had no mums or no families in this big cold grey city of ours (Auckland, NZ).  So knowing how it is to raise kids with no relative nearby I put my hand up to be surrogate granny.  Once the gorgeous K was born her Dad asked “well, what are we going to call you now? GrannyG? (G being my first initial)” Brilliant! it had a lovely ring to it and I embraced it!

They’ve since repeated the child-bearing bit and now I have two lovely granddaughters who both call me GrannyG and I get to babysit, buy impractical but gorgeous illustrated books for them to “keep” and fill them up with cake and chocolate when they visit! What fun!

I’ve been a crafty kind of person since a very young age, always making something textile or fibre related, but didn’t really get obsessed about it until about 8 years ago when I discovered the internet and all the incredible resources on here.  It kept me stimulated and looking for new ideas all the time.

In 2009 I finally took the plunge and started podcasting, I was inspired by Brenda Dayne (patron saint of the knit podcasters) several years ago, but it wasn’t until the stars aligned themselves last year and I said “bugger it, I’m going to podcast” that I actually did it (funny that).

In the planning stages I knew it needed to be more than just about me (well, how dull would that be!!) and I also had just become involved with Creative Fibre Society and was blown away by the level of talent and diversity which exists in New Zealands fibrecraft community.  I also realised that I alternate between my crafts of choice (knitting, spinning, weaving, sewing, baking) so it wouldn’t be sustainable to focus the podcast on just one.  After a million coffees, a lot of excitement and a sleepless night, Crafternoon Tea with GrannyG was born!

It’s a total joy and pleasure to bring the diversity of the New Zealand craft world to the airwaves, I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
